Today my dad and I started the beginnings of what will become a good sized gourd and pumpkin garden. Just outside of town here in western Wisconsin my family and I own a cabin in the woods on 168 acres of our hunting land. It is beautiful. Lots and lots of trees and trails. This year is the first year we have really started using the cabin since we bought it about 3 years ago. We are done with updates and add-ons and now this is the first spring that we can be out at the cabin and enjoy all the beautiful wonders nature has to offer!

Our cabin sits up high and is built into a hill. Surrounding our cabin is a good sized yard we cleared about a year ago. After much discussion about where a gourd and pumpkin patch should go we decided it would be best if the garden was close to a water source, and that water source is the cabin with a hose hook up.

Today dad dug many holes and I leveled wood beams into the ground in the yard at the cabin to start building the perimeter of the gourd and pumpkin patch. Here is what it looks like so far.

I plan to plant a variety of gourds close to the perimeter of the patch so that the gourds can climb up the netting that we are going to surround the patch in to protect it from the local wildlife. In the center of the patch there will be room for pumpkins, zucchini and cucumbers. I am looking forward to this new cabin backyard project. I can't wait to start planting!
